The dramatic scenes could be witnessed across central Middlesbrough as acrid smoke filled the skies
A huge fire, originating from a car scrapyard close to the Tees Transporter Bridge, had locals looking to the sky this afternoon as bellow’s of black smoke filled the air of central Middlesbrough.
The fire, which is believed to have started at around 2pm, attracted a large presence from Cleveland Fire and Police services as it raged for around two hours.
Explosions could be heard and at least three huge fire balls were witnessed by those looking on in amazement, before the emergency services appeared to bring the blaze under control.
The dramatic scenes drew large crowds towards the premises of Jap Euro North East, with people attracted out of local businesses and the neighbouring Middlesbrough College to take in the remarkable scenes.
In an indication to the level of smoke that filled the sky, there have been reports that the thick black clouds could be seen from as far Whitby – some 25 miles away.
Roads in the area, including Durham Street which leads to the Tees Transporter Bridge remain under police cordon at this stage.
