STONES THAT COULD SAVE A LIFE PLACED ON SALTBURN’S HUNTCLIFF

Stones with important and uplifting messages have been spotted in Saltburn.

Teessider Emily Armitage has placed colourful and positive rocks along the Cleveland Way and on Huntcliff in Saltburn in an attempt to prevent suicide.

Huntcliff has unfortunately seen many tragedies over the years, and has become a suicide blackspot in the area.

Local Emily has struggled with her own mental health and wants to help others who are dealing with these issues.

In a bid to raise awareness and prevent further tragedy, she has painted inspirational messages on stones placed along the cliff.

TUXtra reporter Lauren Heslop spoke to Emily about the stones.

The stones say things like: ‘You will get through this, you are needed here’ and ‘Don’t give up now, call someone’.

They also feature the contact information for Samaritans, who are free to use and available 24/7.

The stones feature a variety of inspirational messages.

The cliff edge is extremely dangerous, and many accidents have also taken place there.

Paul Waugh, a former coastguard, has also left rocks and signs to raise awareness about the dangers.

The path is, at some points, extremely narrow so visitors are urged to take care and be responsible.

Huntcliff stands in Saltburn and is a well known local landmark.

Children are also getting involved, and painting their own stones with messages about safety and wellbeing.

Emily is collecting more stones to continue working on this project.

If you are affected by any of the issues discussed in this article, you can contact Samaritans or visit Mind for more information.
