1960 – Elvis Presley

‘Are You Lonesome Tonight?’ started a six week run at No.1 in the US Billboard Chart. This single was Presley’s third US No.1 of 1960.

1962 – The Beatles

The Beatles performed two evening shows in Liverpool, first at the Cavern Club and second at the 527 Club.

1974 – John Lennon & Elton John

John Lennon made what would be his final live concert appearance, joining Elton John on stage for three songs at the famous Madison Square Garden in New York City. Lennon played ‘Whatever Gets You Thru The Night’ and was join by Elton John for renditions of ‘I Saw Her Standing There’ and Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds’.

1987 – R.E.M.

R.E.M. had their first entry on a US Billboard Chart with ‘The One I Love’ debuting at No.10.

1991 – Nirvana

Nirvana appeared on BBC’s The Top Of The Pops in London. After being asked to lip-sync ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ to a tape, lead singer Kurt Cobain protested by singing an octave lower than the original (later stating he was imitating Morrissey). He also attempted to eat his microphone at one point, also changing some lyrics in the song from “load up on guns, bring your friends” for “load up on drugs, kill your friends”.
