TU-XTRA is TU-PROUD

TU-Xtra is PROUD to support TU-Proud

At Teesside University we are committed to supporting our LGBT+ students and providing an inclusive environment where you can be yourself.

TU Proud is a brand new initiative to promote equality, diversity, and inclusion.

We are launching TU Proud on national Bi Visibility Day on Thursday 23 September with a live screened talk by Phillippa Scrafton, from Stonewall on why LGBT+ allies and role models are important. It takes place at 10.00am, in Room T2.11 in The Curve, and live here on TU-Xtra by clicking the link below

Allies and role models

Our key element of TU Proud is promoting the ways in which LGBT+ allies and role models can help break down barriers and create a more inclusive campus.

Anyone can become an ally. Becoming an ally means you can offer visible support to other students and make a real difference in ways that will benefit not only the individual, but our whole community.

An LGBT+ role model is someone who understands the potential they have to influence people and uses the opportunity constructively to help and inspire others.

We want more of our students to become LGBT+ allies and role models, please contact our LGBT+ Focus Group to find out how you can help.

Share your gender pronouns

One simple way to be an LGBT+ ally is to share your gender pronouns, such as she/her/hers, he/him/his and they/them/theirs. This will help transgender and non-binary colleagues feel acknowledged and accepted.

You can help classmates feel comfortable in sharing their preferred pronouns by sharing yours first, for example on your social media profiles, or by adding them to your email signature.

Events and activities

We have lots of LGBT+ events planned over the coming months, including a TU Proud campus tour of our schools and main reception areas to talk about inclusion and to offer advice.

Further afield, Middlesbrough Pop Up Pride 2021 will take place at Centre Square, Middlesbrough, on Saturday 2 October. Look out for TU Proud as we will be there on the day!

If you would like more information, check out our TU Proud web page, or contact the LGBT+ Focus Group.
