VOLUNTEERS SCRAMBLE TO CLEAN UP NORTH EAST COASTLINE

Throughout this month volunteers have flocked to clear up beaches all along the North East coast.

The Autumn Beach Clean, organised by Surfers Against Sewage, is set to finish on October 29.

Crowds from Whitley Bay to Filey have got involved giving up their free time to collect any waste before it makes its way back into the ocean.

One such beach clean recently went ahead in North Shields.

Linda Lambert, Surfers Against Sewage Representative, organised a clean up of Fish Quay and volunteers turned up in large numbers to do their bit to stop plastic pollution.

TUXtra went along to the event and to find out more click on the video.

As summer beach clean programmes end and the North Sea hurricane season starts, plastic pollution can build up dramatically.

The aim of the Autumn Beach Clean is to encourage the public to care for coastal communities that are used all year round.

Since 2011, Surfers Against Sewage has organised 1,419 beach cleans and in that time 114, 341 kilos of plastic have been removed from beaches.

If you’re interested in getting involved, you can find a list of future beach cleans here.

You can also start your own beach clean, find out more information on the Surfers Against Sewage website.

Alternatively you can find #2minutebeachclean boards at various beaches around or near Teesside such as Saltburn, Seaton Carew, Staithes and Runswick Bay.

#2minutebeachclean boards will provide you with a litter picker, and bin bags to conduct your own beach clean. These can then be left at a bin to be collected by the council.
