A former Teesside doctor talks about her battle with the COVID pandemic

A former Teesside doctor has spoken of her experiences while spending two years fighting COVID on hospital wards.

Lena Imad Hassan was a 26-year-old junior doctor working in medicine I. JCUH  at the James Cook Hospital in Middlesbrough when COVID hit.

It came exactly a week after She had just booked a holiday to Italy with her two best friends. She was so excited about this. as It was her dream to travel to Italy with her best friends.

But sadly, the lockdown happened and the Italian dream was crushed.

She said: “It was replaced by a nightmare, a global pandemic.”

“A new potentially lethal virus no one knew much about.

“It was terrifying going to work every day. Thinking what if I catch it, what if I die from it?

“I still remember the first patient I saw and the extent of the meaning that patients went through from their need for medical  ventilators.

“The situation was confusing for everyone. We were dealing with something happening for the first time”.

Little did she know that her trip was not cancelled but merely postponed. Because two years later she got to go to Italy and enjoy a gondola ride in Venice with her two best friends.
