University’s Radio Station opening back up

Teesside University’s Radio Station TUxtra is opening back up this semester and they are looking for people to join.

Tuxtra spoke to the Station’s Manager Helen Lumsdon  about this exciting opportunity for students.

“It’s a fantastic opportunity to develop a broad range of skills – not just specific to radio but to any career. Broadcasting is a very competitive field, so this type of hands-on experience will set you apart from the competition,” She said.

“Our aim is to provide relevant and meaningful content, to champion the talent that is nurtured through Teesside University and to support our local community.”

Helen is doing her Master’s Degree in Digital Media and Communications and has been the Station Manager since June 2023, so not a long time but she absolutely loves it. She says there’s a lot to do but she works best when under pressure.

In my Interview with Helen, she reminisces about what made her interested in Radio in the first place: “I have always loved radio, from as far back as I can remember. Music and radio especially played (no pun intended) a huge part in my childhood.”

“I also remember my first radio. It was an old wooden chest radiogram; it was big enough to fill almost half of my bedroom! It meant I could listen to the radio whenever I was in my room. By far the best part was listening to the football commentary on a Saturday afternoon, I only ever managed to get two Boro matches, but it was just as good as being there in person.”

The Radio Station are very fortunate to have two purpose-built radio studios with industry standard equipment. The system they use to broadcast is used by many commercial radio stations in the UK and is similar to systems used at Capital.

Helen is looking for people to join who love a challenge, have creative minds, good communication and are team players. People who have a good voice, but also people who are good at developing a project behind the scenes. And definitely people who are good with social media!

If this sounds like you, there are lots of roles on offer from presenting shows, producing, scheduling, music programming, news and sports correspondences, script writing and technical assistance right through to social media and marketing.

Anyone who is interested in joining the team, Helen, would love to hear from you.
