Teesside University’s men’s football second team has brought a title home by winning the Northern tier 6-6D league.
With a 3-2 win over Northumbria Nines, Teesside managed to leapfrog their Tyneside counterparts and secure a league victory on their home ground.
Teesside took a commanding 3-0 going into halftime, with Ifedayo Oyegoke contributing a pair and Shawn Nyirenda adding the final score.
Northumbria got a goal back early before the home side went a man down after winger Prince Edet was sent off for serious foul play.
The visitors added another goal late but the game ended with Teesside University winning the league.
TUXtra’s Layne Million got the opportunity to speak with winger Ben Sedgwick after the match.
Ben said: “It’s a great achievement. I think it’s a milestone for me as it’s the first time I won a title as a Teesside University football player. We are all really proud to have represented the university in this way.”
Ben reflected on the team’s last season in which they again came close to the top however ultimately wasn’t able to capitalise. He said: “We came really close last season. We came second to Sunderland and there was a feeling there was unfinished business.”
Although he started multiple games earlier in the year, Ben came off the bench in this penultimate game. “You have always got to respect the coach’s choice but I was a little disappointed. I have so much respect for the coach though and we obviously started 3-0, so he did make a good decision.”
With his graduation coming up this summer, Ben’s reflected on the team’s locker room celebration.
He said: “The coach came in and said ‘you all put in a great shift, thanks for a brilliant season,’ before getting his water bottle out and spraying us all. It was a really fun moment.”
