Is Teesside your forever home? How to survive moving away for a job.

The fear of moving away from home is very real for a lot of people, especially students, with the idea of packing your things and leaving family and friends miles away being out of the question for some.

However, moving is a natural part of life and allows people to experience something new, to grow and to find careers they would have never thought of before.

Isaac Edwards works as a Tool Custodian within a small cage supplying tools to engineers for aircraft work at the Royal Air Force Base at Brize Norton in Carterton after his move from Teesside.

His advice to students worried about graduating and having to find a job outside of the North East is to just to go for it.

Isaac believes preparation is key and before moving you should get accommodation prior to arrival to make the transition as smooth as possible.

Making new friends can be difficult but Isaac used his “Northern Edge” to his advantage, creating an ice breaker for conversations and interactions with strangers and new co-workers.

During his free time Isaac finds all kinds of activities and events to attend, while exploring London to further his new social circle, showing that a little bit of initiative can help to create a support bubble that makes you feel at home.

When speaking about the move Isaac said: “I don’t think I was that scared but I was aware of the struggle even if I hadn’t of moved in with my dad down here and I had moved to Newcastle instead”

“Networking is really important, it’s all about who you know, I can’t believe I ever wanted to stay in Redcar but it’s easy to make do with what you have even if it bogs you down, you learn to make do, you stop wanting to do anything and you shutdown.

“I’ve given myself a chance to be comfortable in my 30’s which I never thought I’d have up North.”
